The Blue Orpington was introduced from England in the late 1800's, Orpingtons quickly became one of the most popular farm fowls in this country. Large, quiet and stately birds, Blue Orpingtons are a dual purpose fowl and are easily dressed. They are a lovely white skinned eating bird, excellent rosters. A large breed, Roosters will average 8-11 lbs when full grown. They are good winter layers, producing beautiful brown eggs right through cold season. The Blue Orpington is a very docile bird and is very suitable for families with small children. They seem to be smarter than other breeds learning to come when called. They take very well to be handling and are very easy to tame. They are great fosters and set very easily, they are also excellent mothers tending to their brood with great diligence.

THE COLOR BLUE: An interesting genetic characteristic of the Blue Orpington is the return in the descendant of not only all blue chicks, but also the black, white, and black-white colors used in the earliest matings many generations ago to create these blue fowl. Andalusian blue genetics apply to this breed. All of these chicks carry the blue genes and when mated black to splash or with other blues in turn produce numerous blue progeny. Approximately 50% of the baby chicks will be all blue. The other 50% will be black, white, and black/white combinations (splash).
