Wheaten Penedesenca is another exception to the rule that chickens with white earlobes normally lay white eggs. This spectacular rare breed lays a rich dark reddish brown egg much like a Marans. Wheaten Penedesencas are a Spanish breed was nearly extinct in the early 80's but has been brought back through commendable breeding conservation.
Wheaten Penedesenca are still extremely rare in the United States. This is your opportunity to help preserve this Catalan chicken and also treat yourself to their lovely shades of dark eggs and graceful beauty. They are very well suited to free ranging and also stand confinement well. If you are a fancier of dark egg laying chickens, this heat-hardy breed is a must for your breeding program
The female Wheaten Penedesenca plumage is a Salmon-cream across the back with a very light Salmon-cream to white abdomen and breast. They have a feminine and delicate appearance and are prolific layers, males resemble the colorful feathering of a Brown Leghorn. Another special trait of this unique and rare breed is the presence of a "carnation" or "kings" comb, spikes protrude from the base of the comb resembling a flower or a crown.
